Reliability of the Bible has been an argument for years. The Bible is one of the most well-known books of all times, People read the Bible daily and rely heavily on the words written within this sacred book. Mr. Towns stated in his video, God “breathed” the words of the Bible.  The Bible is said to be a revelation of God’s promise to mankind and that Jesus is the son of God and that Jesus died for us and that Jesus will return for all believers.

As a believer, I have regularly turned to the Bible as a source of comfort and guidance.  While working as a registered nurse in a state hospital that serves a wide population, I come in contact daily with a lot of people from many different religious backgrounds and beliefs.  I also have friends that have the same and different religious beliefs than I have.  Faith is often tested on the oncology unit where many patients hear discouraging news on a daily basis.

As Dr. Mark Strauss states in the Interview "Reliability of the Gospels video, “many people look at the Bible as just historical documents and challenge the fact that they are even reliable.”  Many people believe that the Bible is a way to promote their own beliefs on other people.  Without belief, there is no way that you will believe that the Bible is a reliable source of God’s word.  The Bible has a way of changing a person’s heart and once you allow the word into your heart you will be forever changed.

There are countless arguments and controversies that arise when it comes to whether or not the the Gospel is legitimately reliable. The Bible is one of the most challenged books of all time. There are questions as to how one divine and perfect being once walked this earth, performed miracles and died so all could live for eternity in paradise. As the videos mentioned, as with the majority of any ancient documents, we no longer have the original copies. The original documents, as with anything that ages, simply withered away to nothing. With documents that old, preservation methods did not yet exist as they do now (such as with the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights etc…).

An argument the video “sets up” (for lack of a better term), is; if we don’t have original copies of the gospel, then how do we know it was legitimately the Word of God? For example: the game “telephone”; one person relays the original message to one person in a group and another to another person until the message has been told to every group member. The result: when the last person hears the message, the original message is usually anything but. The validity of the word is questioned because of the concern for possible added or subtracted dialogue passed down over all of this time since the Bible was written.

The second argument posed through the video and also the reading is: how do we know anything in the Bible actually happened? Facts are, the Bible is full of information that still applies to us today. Israel, Jerusalem and many other places that Jesus walked, still contain proof of existence of Biblical stories that we are told today.

Although we no longer have the original documents of the gospel, experts that have studied extensively (both biblical and scientific), have found definitive proof of many events in the Bible. The word of God is a life changing, convicting, challenging and inspiring book that has been tried time and time again for its reliability and has always come through consistently.  Nobody today physically saw Jesus walk the earth or what he said to his disciples as to what to write in His word, but like many things we cannot physically see or touch, does not mean that it does not exist. Too many people fail to have faith in God’s word because they can’t see him, hear him or touch him physically. These are concepts that are difficult to put in complete perspective but the best verse to sum up this portion we’ve learned,: For we walk by faith; not by sight. -2 Corinthians 5:7

For centuries Christians have followed the word of the Bible and it has been believed to be the word of God. Many Christians have been plagued with doubt. How can we be sure the words that we read are the original words of God? There are no original copies of scripture by their authors. How do we know we aren’t reading a book of exaggerated truths or bias opinions of how man should live?

Over the course of this week’s readings the most convincing argument for the reliability of scripture that I read was in the online excerpt: “Inspiration: Guaranteeing the Word of Scripture”. In the passage it asked why man would create a perfect God that he could never live up to? It is human nature to want to be the best and to thrive for success. Why would man create a perfect God who is incapable of sin? The answer is simple, he didn’t. Man was inspired by God to convey His message to His people.

If God inspired the author how do we know that the author did not add his own bias to the Bible and claim they were the words of God? The answer to this is simple as well. If we look at the geological and historical aspects of the Bible it is all accurate. A simple man could not predict the future and he could not know the history between 1440 B.C. when Moses began the Bible, to A.D. 100 when John finished it. The Bible is consistent with everything that has happened thus far. The Bible has created civilizations where it had not existed before. How could that be possible if it were not the word of God? It simply could not.

In conclusion, we know the scripture written in the Bible is the word of God and only God because the authors were inspired from start to finish. Mankind is too flawed to create the perfect God on his own. The authors could not predict the future and more than you or I. God inspired them to carry his message. The miracles and life around us are a testament to the truth of the Bible.
