"Natural Hazards" Please respond to the following:
Access the “USGS Hazards” website under the Natural Hazards terms section of the Science Corner. You can also access the website at http://www.usgs.gov/natural_hazards/. Choose one (1) of the following geologic hazards: earthquake, landslide, or flood. Next, determine the key factors that influence the occurrence of your chosen hazard. Then, analyze the human role in elevating the risks of occurrence, as well as mitigation strategies to minimize damage and loss of life.
Earthquakes- Key factors that influence of earthquakes are first of all tectonic movements in the Earth’s crust. I also believe that drilling for oil contributes to most of the earthquakes we see today. We elevate this risk every time we drill on a site for oil. Interrupting the earth’s crust and depending how far they drill, this can trigger earthquakes from deep in the ground and miles from the drill site. Some strategies that we can come up with to minimize damage and loss of life, is to create an emergency plan to control hazards in high earthquake zones. We can also brace items such as fans and piping, etc.

Next, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research articles on the Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii and Mount Pinatubo in Philippines. Based on the type (i. e., cinder cone, shield, or composite) of volcano, and its common eruption characteristics, speculate on the societal and environmental damages that Mauna Loa and Mount Pinatubo would cause if they erupted today. Justify your response with evidence from your research.
Mauna Loa Volcano is a shield type of volcano. It is the largest and most active volcanoes on the planet. It first erupted in 1843 and there have been an additional 32 since then. The last eruption took place in 1984 an dis predicted by scientist to erupt again. If it were to erupt today it could kill thousands of people. It would wipe out thousands of homes and fishing waters. The community however is alerted by activity that is monitored all the time now, as earthquakes.
The Mount Pinatubo Volcano is also a shield type of volcano. This volcano has not erupted since June of 1991 and almost 500 years previous to that. If this volcano erupted it would cause a major ozone depletion and a worldwide decrease in temperature. Also US military is stationed close by as well as the capital city Manila.
Describe three (3) ways that Wegener's continental drift hypothesis has helped to shape modern plate tectonic theory, and then explain why his hypothesis was not widely accepted by his peers when first proposed. Next, analyze at least two (2) types of evidence used to support plate tectonic theory.

- Gave us an in site on plate movement and opened the door for us to create state of the art research to become what we are today.
2 types of evidence used to support plate tectonic theory
- Wegener questioned why coal deposits, commonly associated with tropical climates, would be found near the North Pole and why the plains of Africa would show evidence of glaciation
- The striking distribution of fossils on the different continents connect with one another when placed back together.
It wasn’t accepted by his peers because it went against what they thought they had figured out for years. They said they would have to start over if this was true.
