Project #11525 - History of healing - 5 elements theory

TOPIC: The five elements theory, presumes that all phenomena of the universe and nature can be broken down into five elemental qualities – Do you think this can still be applied today? Do you think there should be any inclusions or exclusions to more accurately assess someone in the 21st century?

This subject is related to the history of healing.

- It doesn't need to be in an essay/report form.

- Just a brief short discussion

Here is an example of what my classmate has discussed

I believe that the five elements theory of fire, earth, metal, water and wood can definitely still be applied in today’s modern world. The theory is based on the belief that ‘all things are connected’ and a balance of five master groups, it considers factors and connections between categories including seasons and climate, internal organs and body tissue, emotions, colour and taste, and only when all five of the elements are in balance and working in harmony with one another can ‘qi’ or total balance be achieved.

I do believe this is still very relevant in today’s world, and it’s definitely something that resonates naturally with me and that I try to incorporate into my own life. I think perhaps it’s even more relevant today with the increasing demands of our external environment (increasing climates, increased stress and demands of everyday life, increased availability of drugs, alcohol and ‘junk’ foods etc.), to try and achieve this balance and considering we are all ‘energy’ it absolutely makes sense that if one element of our body is out of balance this is going to have an impact on the other elements or body systems.

I also believe with these increased demands unfortunately most of us have lost touch with our connectedness to nature and the universal force, no longer being able to sense or feel these connections.  And while it’s not really a traditional or popular theory in the Western world, I do still believe it to be relevant in the 21st century though perhaps the issue is more with people’s lack of knowledge or perceptions toward it and although we may be less aware of it, it must be considered that every action, thought and emotion impacts in some way on our health and wellbeing.

Here is another example

The five elements considered within this theory are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. Each of the elements has correspondences with the seasons, foods, emotional states, diseases, senses,

They all play an important role in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. For example during the spring season, which belongs to the wood element, we should avoid excessive anger in order to stay healthy : Winter, which belongs to the water element, our bodies prefer to store energy so rest is important, therefore, in winter it is advisable to go to bed early.

I beleive the 5ET is relevant in promoting health & understanding the relationships between the elements canacheive a harmonious balance in nature and life.

The two most basic interactions are known as the generating cycle (mother to son relationship) and the control cycle (grandparent to grandchild relationship).

The relationships are in many ways about respect, awareness and moderation - concepts which are far too often distant from our minds in our modern world. The generating cycle is about mutual support from element to element, if there is an inbalance then the controlling cycle must take over, like the bodies backup plan.

Generally, however, it allows us to understand our lifestyle, diet, and relationships in a way that helps us to maintain awareness of our impact on others, on ourselves, as well as the impact our environment, personal, seasonal, social elements etc.  have on us
