Project #11910 - The Odyssey

Xenia is the relation between host and guest, particularly the moral obligation to welcome and protect the stranger. One of its ritual components is the parting gift offered by the host. The host's gift is so fixed a feature of the xenia relationship that a guest can even ask for something else, if the proffered gift is not suitable. So when Telemachus is offered a splendid chariot and a team of horses by Menelaus, he declines the offer (4.600-610). Menelaus, unoffended, recognizes Telemachus's frankness as the mark of aristocratic birth and he offers him instead "a mixing bowl of wrought metal" (4.615).

Write a one-page (250 word) paper discussing either kleos or xenia as they apply to Odysseus's encounter with the Cyclops. Please make sure that you answer the question fully proofing for spelling, grammar, and logic errors. Your essay should have at least one direct quotation that includes in-text parenthetical citation and conforms to MLA standards.
