Project #12168 - Business Law-Jurisdiction and Power

The word "jurisdiction" begins with the latin word for law, the same word that gives us the word "jury".  Diction in English means a method of speaking.  Thus, jurisdiction literally means the law speaks, a concept closely related to authority.  To say you are within the jurisdiction of the United States is to say the government of the United States has authority in that geographic area.  However, jurisdiction with the geography does not mean the government has authority over the subject matter.  This is at the heart of our federal system of government, where multiple jurisdictions exercise power.  From your reading of the US constitution, you have seen the enumerated (specifically named) powers of Congress, and you have seen the powers of the executive and judicial branches described.

Read a piece of secondary material on the power of governments in the United States.  You may choose any issue related to power and its exercise you find.  Then find a statute, case or regulation from the primary materials and produce a reflective writing that addresses the subject of the article, the primary material you chose, and describe why these materials are relevant to an understanding of business.

This writing should be a minimum of a thousand words in length and must be posted using the edit function, clipped and pasted from word into the discussion thread.  The thread subject line should be your name.  Be sure to cite your article and primary material.  Do not use the subject of marijuana as it is in the next assignment.
