What is art for? What is the purpose of art in our world? These are two questions that I will answer with the help of quotes from The American Art Therapy Association website, and also quotes from Dr. Nigel Spivey’s documentary, How Art Made the World.

I believe art to be a means of communication. It is a way to relay thoughts, ideas, and emotions from our brains to the open world around us. Some people prefer to communicate through their art. A viewer can tell how the artist was feeling just from looking at the artwork. If the painting is black, or dark, then perhaps the artist was trying to portray sadness. If there is red mixed in with the dark, then maybe there is a bit of anger being portrayed. The artist is releasing those inner emotions. This is a means of therapy for many people. According to The American Art Therapy Association (2008), “A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. Research has shown that the use of art therapy has tremendous therapeutic benefits on individuals who experience illness, trauma, and mental health problems and those seeking personal growth.” They believe that by using the tool of art, they can help restore wellness to people. Art therapy is being used all over the world. Some of these individuals who have health issues, are unable to communicate through speak. Through art therapy, they are finally able to communicate. The ability to communicate is so crucial.  This is something that art is for. This is a way that art is changing lives.

Art has a purpose. It brings people and cultures together. It inspires people. It brings happiness to people’s lives. These are the good purposed to art. In today’s world, you can look anywhere and you will see several forms of art. For the most part, you see advertisements, photographs, and more advertisements. Sadly this art is being used to display vanity. In all of these advertisements you see models that are a size 2. That is not realistic. But for some reason that is what people strive to be. “Human’s don’t like reality,” states Dr. Nigel Spivey in his documentary, How Art Made the World. This statement is very true. Humans would love to look like those size 2 models. For many Americans, that will never happen. Everyday, girls apply many pounds of makeup to themselves in order to get closer to this unrealistic look. This is a trait of human beings trying to strive for perfection. We are reminded of this perfection every time we look up and see these advertisements. This is a negative impact from art.

Art’s purpose is not to show us what we need to change about ourselves. But that is how art is being used. Art is supposed to bring emotion, and communication to the people around us. We are supposed to be inspired in a good way. It is supposed to help build self-esteem, not drop it down. Art purpose in today’s world is not what it should be. Art therapy is a great purpose for Art. Lives are being changed. That is arts true purpose, to change lives.
