Topic Proposal and Bibliography Assignment

In order to facilitate your research for the final paper, you will write a one-page report of your proposed paper topic and an annotated bibliography. The one-page report will include a general outline of the proposed paper topic as well as a proposed thesis for your research topic. This report should also reference a few examples of images or objects you will address and the significance of your topic.

The annotated bibliography will include eight good sources (no textbooks, reference books, or websites; any articles must be longer than two pages).  This annotated bibliography will be cited in the Turabian style (online source for the Turabian style is included below) and organized alphabetically by author. Each citation will include one written paragraph (of at least three sentences) describing the subject matter and relevance of the work to your chosen topic. A book review will not be accepted. An example of an annotated bibliography citation is below.

A hardcopy of the topic proposal and bibliography is due at the start of class, on Wednesday, September 18. In addition to the hardcopy, you will also need to submit the assignment to Dropbox on Carmen. Last minute computer or printer malfunction is not an acceptable excuse for a late paper. Any assignments turned in after the due date will be marked down as follows: Up to 24 hours from the due date, 10 point deduction; 24-48 hours from the due date, 20 point deduction; 48-72 hours late, 30 point deduction; More than 72 hours late, 50 point deduction. Late assignments will not be accepted if the assignment has already been graded and returned to fellow students.

Final Paper

For the final paper, you are to select a research topic from any period of China’s art history. The paper will be based off of the preliminary research completed for the Topic Proposal and Annotated Bibliography. You should include all relevant images at the end of the paper along with the artist’s name (if applicable), title of the artwork, and date of the artwork. A helpful resource for writing about art and citing images is included below. The paper will be an 8-10 page document (Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced). The bibliography included with the final paper will be a standard bibliography and will have additional sources to what was reviewed for the annotated bibliography. The 8-10 page requirement does not include images or the bibliography.

A hardcopy of the final paper is due at the beginning of class on Friday, November 22. In addition to the hardcopy, you will also need to submit the assignment to Dropbox on Carmen before midnight of that same day.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using someone else’s intellectual work and relaying it as one’s own work without acknowledging the source. Examples of plagiarism are: copying of passages of works in a paper without citation, use of ideas or views of another without acknowledgment, paraphrasing another’s work without citation. The University provides guidelines for research and the disciplinary actions of academic misconduct online at: http://fye.osu.edu/pdf/orientation/policies.pdf.

When you submit the assignment to Dropbox on Carmen it will be set up to check for plagiarism. If you have any questions about how to attribute a source, please contact me via email at mathison.5@osu.edu, and we can discuss this matter.

Example of an annotated bibliography citation:

Mueller, Laura. Western Art: A Critical Survey. Chicago:
GoodLion Press, 2001.

Laura Mueller is a long-time lecturer in both art and literature. In this
book, Mueller's experience is evident as she guides the reader through a
combination of close observation of individual art works and a clearly organized systematic review of major schools and themes in Western art. The scope is wide, including sculpture, jewelry, and architecture, as well
as the main focus on painting. Watercolor is treated alongside the
numerous oils, pastels and mixed media. Although printmaking is not a usual focus of such books, Mueller makes an exception for the major
contributors, like Durer, Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso.
Along with her book on Ukiyo-E Japanese prints, this book shows a
profound depth of analysis, but in an amazingly clear style which would
benefit the general reader along with the more knowledgeable. Some art
history surveys can be tedious, but this one comes through as exciting,
personal and profound.
