Project #12802 - Theories of Business in Society

The nature of business in society is complex.  Every person and every organization requires resources.  That simple truth, the universal need for resources, is a contributing factor to the complexity of business and society.  It means that everything is a business.  The schools systems of government are businesses.  (I just spent twenty bucks on books at a school book fair and later this year will get my tax bill)  Police, road crews, and any government office operates with the features of revenue and expense.  Additionally, some organizations are classed as not for profit, meaning that while they may generate revenue in excess of expenses, they do not distributed this excess to owners.  It is the distribution of profits or revenue to owners that distinguishes a for profit business from not for profits and government.

In this assignment, read about the theories of business in society.  What is the purpose of business?  Do for profit enterprises have a social obligation?  What role do consumers of goods and services expect of businesses? What is the role of governments in shaping the activities of business?

Prepare a reflective writing that is transferred by the edit function of clip and paste from word to this blackboard thread, putting your name in the subject line, one of a thousand words in length, including citations to your reading.  Explain what you think of business and society.
