Project #12871 - Theme essay

For each Unit, you will write an essay that elucidates a particular theme, or discusses an issue or thread between multiple texts from that Unit. For example, you might discuss how Whitman, Dickinson, and James address nature, or the body, or sensuality, or technology, etc. These Theme Essays are meant to be relatively informal, but they should be deliberate (there should be a thesis) and they should be proofread. These essays are meant to be squibs. Have some fun. The point is to make connections between the texts.

You will write two double-spaced pages. You should connect at least three figures from the Unit. These will be submitted to Turnitin by the appropriate due date. You should quote from the texts as needed and indicate page numbers from the Norton Anthology so that your reader can find these references (James 253). For the Theme Essays, you are discouraged from relying on outside sources. Your connections should come from your own ingenuity. What connections do you so see? Don’t rely on scholars for answers.

If you use additional sources for historical information, or biographical information, please include a bibliographic entry that follows MLA guidelines. These essays will not be revised.

That’s it. See me with any questions. Visit the writing tutor. Theme Essays offer an opportunity to surprise, and to show that you are awake to the literature.

Yes. Have some fun.

When writing your theme essays I would like you to try to format them according to MLA guidelines (double-spaced, etc.). The following link will help:

Also, you will need to quote from the literature in order to support your analysis/discussion. The following link will help when formatting quotations:

Please note for poetry you are technically supposed to include the line number in the citation. I am okay with either the line number OR the page number from our anthology. So, yes, I am changing the rules for our purposes.  For the theme essays you only have to include a Works Cited page if you are using additional sources. If you are using a different edition of the anthology please make sure that it is clear which poem/story that you are referencing.  This might get complicated, but do your best.

This is American Reading Literature class. This paper does not have to be serious. I am looking for around 200words.
