Project #13274 - Teaching

SUBDOMAIN 601.1 - TESTING

Competency 601.1.2: Measurement Knowledge - The graduate understands measurement and testing issues relevant to classroom instruction.

Objective 601.1.2-06: Evaluate a given assessment instrument for bias.

Task:

Download and read the two articles in “Web Links” below before beginning this assignment:

A.  Open the Simulated Assessment Instrument file (attached) and type a response to the following for each of the ten test items:

1.  Indicate whether or not the item contains gender, ethnicity, religious, age, and/or elite bias by typing “Contains Bias” or “Not Biased” under each item’s “Item Status” heading.

2.  If the item contains bias:

a.  Describe in a sentence or two how the item is biased.

b.  Provide specific revision suggestions to eliminate bias in the entire item.

Note: Some items may contain several elements of bias, break more than one criterion, or break a criterion more than once. Be sure to address all the problems in each biased item.

The graphics are for illustration only and do not have the "finished" look expected in a published exam. Do not worry about this aspect of the items.

You will be evaluated on whether you address all ten items and how well you demonstrate an understanding of bias, an ability to identify characteristics of bias, and an ability to revise items to eliminate bias. Do not solve the questions.

B.  When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the attached Rubric Terms.

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.
