Integrative Research Paper Overview
The purpose of the Integrative Research Paper is to help you understand the interrelatedness of business functions/elements – how they impact various parts of the firm and each other.
Here's how it works:
The company is Union Pacific Railroad
You should research at least four major functions/elements of the company (e.g., HR, finance, accounting, marketing, IT, management philosophy/culture, operations, etc.), explaining how those functions/elements are organized, how they contribute to the bottom line of the company and how they impact other functions/elements in the firm – particularly the other two functions/elements of interest in your paper. Be careful that you don’t try to cover too much territory, because you also need to explain the implications of this interrelatedness for managers, employees, customers and society at large (refer to first paragraph above) – and inform your findings with scholarly literature -- all within at least 5 pages.
The design of your presentation is entirely up to you -- whatever works best, given the nature of your company. Think of your company. Think of your goal. Think of your audience. This is your chance to be creative. It is up to you to determine the way to best articulate the interrelatedness of your company functions to your Board of Directors. Will they be impressed enough with your understanding of the big picture to give you a raise?
DO use sub-headings. DO ground your observations in theory and chapter concepts. DO pull extensively from existing, scholarly literature and the professional and government sources.
