PART 5: SPSS -Use the SPSS database to answer the following five questions.  You will need to use the database called hw1_data.sav posted on Blackboard to answer the questions.  BE SURE TO PASTE THE APPROPRIATE OUTPUT TABLE INTO THE SPACE FOR EACH RESPONSE.

Background

You conduct a cohort study with 735 obese participants to measure the association between diabetes and angina pectoris.  At the baseline visit, you screen your study participants for the presence of diabetes and find that 664 of these obese participants have diabetes (exposed) and 71 of these obese participants do not have diabetes (unexposed). All participants enrolled into the study screened negative for angina pectoris at the baseline visit.  You follow participants for 3 years to determine if those who reported having diabetes at baseline (exposed) were more or less likely to be diagnosed with angina pectoris over the course of the study than those who report not having diabetes (unexposed). [Please note: One study participant has missing data for angina pectoris because he refused to be screened for this condition during the study].

 

Use the data in SPSS hw1 to answer these questions. 

 

23a. What is the risk (incidence) of angina pectoris in your study overall? 

 

 


23b. What is the risk (incidence) of angina pectoris among participants who reported having diabetes at baseline? 

 

 

 

23c. What is the risk (incidence) of angina pectoris among participants who reported not having diabetes at baseline?

 

 

 

23d. What is the risk ratio of incident angina pectoris for obese participants who reported having diabetes compared to those who did not report having diabetes at baseline? Be sure to report this risk ratio in a sentence and then write an additional sentence to report whether your result indicates an increased or decreased risk of angina pectoris among those with diabetes.

 

 

  

23e. Calculate the Attributable Risk Percent (AR%) which will give you an estimate of the proportion of those with angina pectoris among those with diabetes (the exposed) due to exposure. Then interpret the AR% in a sentence. 

 

 

 

24. In 2009, you decided to do a survey of DrPH students at Hunter College on their health status, and 18 out of 230 students reported having diabetes. You also learn among these same 230 students, an additional 7 students develop diabetes in 2010. What is the incidence proportion of diabetes in 2010?
