Hello All,

1. Choose one example of inhibition that is found in either glycolysis or the citric acid cycle. Explain if your example is a process of feedback inhibition or allosteric activation. After evaluating the necessary functions in cellular respiration, you will need to employ a little imagination to suggest a real life situation that parallels the inhibition or regulation you described above.  One example of inhibition is the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. “High concentrations of ATP and NADH stimulate the kinase, which phosphorylates and inactivates the complex. ADP and pyruvate inhibit the kinase, whereas Ca2+ stimulates the phosphatase, which dephosphorylates and thereby activates the complex” (Tymoczko, J. 2013). The complex is a feedback inhibition. The importance of the complex in metabolism affects the central nervous system. The inhibition found in the citric acid cycle is displayed in the disorder Beriberi. The disorder affects the central nervous system and is a deficiency of thiamine. The precursor to thiamine is thiamine pyrophosphate. The lack of thiamine pyrophosphate impairs the activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.

2. In addition to its role in catabolism, the citric acid cycle also plays an important role in cellular anabolism, or biosynthetic reactions. Many of the citric acid cycle intermediates are precursors for the synthesis of amino acids and other macromolecules required by the cell.

 a. Describe the biomolecule that you think is most important for the cell and why? I think glucose is the most important biomolecule for the cell. Glucose is a carbohydrate. Glucose is the fuel for the cell. The energy generated in the cell is initiated by glucose.

 b. After evaluating the biomolecules used by our bodies for a variety of functions employ your imagination to suggest a real life situation that exemplifies an anabolic reaction. In the absence of glucose the body will metabolize fat. In fat metabolism the byproduct is acid. The build –up of acid in the body related catabolism of fat will result in metabolic acidosis. In a person who engages in the Atkins diet, which eliminates carbohydrates will experiences metabolic acidosis.
