Project #13796 - Forensic Biology

My final project/research paper is on iris recognition/databases.  This project needs to be tailored to include biology.  This project needs to address course outcomes 1–3:

1. recognize and apply the scientific method to forensic evidence to make decisions and solve problems

2. synthesize and apply forensic science knowledge and methods to evaluate evidence and perform casework

3. effectively communicate forensic information in an ethical manner to legal and other stakeholders for application in legal processes, publications, and policy decisions

Part I Research Paper

Needs to be APA style 5 to 7 pages double spaced.  Also include reference section. There should be a minimum of 10 references, and at least three of them must be original, primary research articles. The original research sources (publications) may come from the Journal of Forensic Sciences, Forensic Science International, or other peer-reviewed sources.

Rubric For Research Projects:

The following elements must be included in the research project:

1)  Primary or peer reviewed journal articles (3).  In the project descriptions a total of ten references are required; I am lax on the total, but the three are strictly required.  Each project must include this type of material.  Primary will of course be difficult to find, but peer reviewed journal articles are easy to find.  If you are in doubt of what is a peer reviewed journal article ask the librarian to aid you. (5 points each)

2)  The project must discuss briefly a scientific technique.  For instance, if you choose a case study, and the examination of evidence includes comparison of bullets by a comparison microscope, you must devote time to explaining this technique in both the presentation and the research project submitted to the assignments folder. (10 points)

3)  In both the paper and powerpoint, a table or diagram or figure is a requirement for the submitted document.  This must be explained in form of a legend or in the text.  This can include, results, timeline, workflow, etc. (5 points)

4)  All abbreviations used in the project must be written fully when first used followed by the abbreviation in parenthesis; all other references to the technique can use the abbreviation.  (5 points)

5)  Grammatical/punctuation/usage errors (3 points, one time charge).

6)   The remaining points depends upon your performance and ability to convey the information truthfully, concisely, clearly, and without plagiarism.  Instances of plagiarism will be handled case-by-case—expect major point deductions,

For example of text, table, and legend for table:

Dr. M. Asse used the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry time of flight (GC-MS-TOF) instrument to analyze dung left by the dead cows in the field.  The results of the GC-MS_TOF analysis is given in the following table.

Legend:  Amount of Copper, Nitrogen and Strictophol determined from GC-MS_TOF analysis of cow dung.

It can be seen from the table, that all three dead cows from the EIEIO farm had levels of strictophol indicating poisoning by the short lived Shortatyme.

Part 2 PowerPoint Presentation

Rubric:  Presenting a Powerpoint Presentation

A.        Presenting a Powerpoint presentation summarizing a paper or other non-powerpoint assignment or full length powerpoint.

            1.         Four slides for powerpoint and nonpowerpoint assignment.

                        a.         Title and purpose of paper

                                    1.         you may include an image with caption

                        b.         Second slide:  A basic discovery, result, salient point,                                                 technique or details of a case study; this list is not complete.

                                    1.         Ensure you set the stage for your result and how it                                                      relates to the question you posed in the first slide

                                    2.         Suggested approach to other content in the second slide

                                                a.         an image with caption is acceptable, but not                                                                  required

                                                b.         For a discovery make sure the date is included                                                                         and ensure you mention the significance of                                                                  discovery when it comes to forensics.

                                                c.         For a significanct result briefly describe why the                                                                       result is significant, and how the result has had                                                                      an impact on forensics.

                                                d.         For an salient or important point, please put this                                                                       in context to the question you are exploring in                                                             your paper or other presentation.

                        c.         Third Slide:  techniques slide; second and third slide                                                  interchangeable.

                                                a.         ought to include how the technique works; an                                                              image or a link to how the technique works is a                                                                        good thing here.

                        c.         The fourth slide:  a brief discussion of the greater significance                                             of your research.

                                                a.         At the most 5 bulleted points.

                                                b.         At most three important references

                                                c.         You may use an image.

            2.         For those of you who chose a power point presentation, submit three slides as above for presentation and use below for final project.

                        a.         The maximum length of presentation is 10 slides; the minimum                                length is 12 slides.  IF IT NEEDS TO BE LONGER, PLEASE CONTACT ME.

                        b.         The slides may contain a combination of images, text and links

                        c.         You must have a title page and a page for references.                                                            Reference citations are required.  Alternatively, you may cite as                               you go, then you do not need a page for references.

                        d.         The second slide introduces the question you are examining                                               and the reasons why this is an important forensic topic.

                        e.         The subsequent slides explains topics.

                                    1.         NO MORE THAN THREE OF THESE SLIDES MUST                                                  EXPLAIN A TECHNIQUE.

                        f.          A concise and easy to read conclusion slide discusses your                                                 findings.

                        g.         YOU MUST PREPARE A 4-SLIDE SUMMARY OF YOUR TOPIC TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS; FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES ABOVE.

B.        General Points for the Powerpoint slides

            1.         A clear background is fine; Background colors may make the slide                          look nice, but these take up memory.

            2.         If you are able convert slides to PNG files.   These files maintain                              resolution when shrinking and expanding and take up less memory                              than other graphic formats.

            3.         Bullets are a good way to make a point.

            4.         Use an easy to read font; I prefer Arial—fonts without the serif(like                          Times New Roman) are better preferred.  Keep Font Size at 11 or                            above; try to avoid a small size.

            5.         YOU MUST SAVE YOUR PRESENTATION AS A PICTURE OR IMAGE FILE.  THIS CAN BE DONE BY CHOOSING THE SAVE AS PICTURES IN MSWORD 2008 FOR MAC( I ASSUME THERE ARE EQUIVALENTS IN OTHER VERSIONS).  PLEASE CHOOSE THE PNG FORMAT.  SAVE THE FILE.  IN MAC VERSION 2008, THIS GENERATES A FILE WITH THREE PNG FILES.  UPLOAD THE FILES TO CONFERENCES USING INSERT IMAGE; ENSURE YOU POST THE FILES IN THE CORRECT ORDER.

                        a.         I require this because it is easier for me to grade; downloading                                             powerpoints is time consuming.

                        b.         If you fail to do this, you will not receive credit for the                                                   assignment.

                        c.         You may attach your full length assignment using the                                                            attachment feature in the conferences.

                        d.         All full length assignments must be posted to the assignment                                               folder.

                        e.         An example is posted in Presentation Conference.
