Project #13841 - discussion question on organizational learning

$10 max is all I can offer.  I need a two paragraph response at least.

From chapter 10, Senge quotes Hamel and Prahalda as follows:

Although strategic planning is billed as a way of becoming more future oriented, most managers, when pressed, will admit that their strategic plans reveal more about today's problems than tomorrow's opportunities

How can the shared vision model improve strategic planning?

Here is an example of what another person responded to this question.

"Once a shared vision has been determined and everyone has bought into it, it becomes engrained into who we are. It becomes part of our personal vision. Once this happens then the vision becomes part of our daily, monthly, and yearly routine. It determines and guides how we look at, and perform our duties.

The shared vision model can improve strategic planning when it encompasses measurable items; such as gross revenue, gross sales etc., into the plan. This helps in preventing the problem of reverting back to today’s problem and discarding the shared vision model. As long that there is a goal that can be monitored, measured, and modified, then we will always strive towards future success.

This does not mean that strategic plans cannot change. This will often happen if, during the measuring and monitoring process, an unexpected problem was uncovered. When encountered, we address these problems with the vision in mind, and continue to move forward. If monitored and discussed regularly, we are able to see and address problems before they get out of control.

It makes me think of a wheel. In the middle of the wheel is the vision. The spokes of the wheel represent daily activities which are derived from the vision. As the wheel turns round and round it appears that things may change, but if you look back towards the core, the vision is still there; no matter what angle you are looking at it from. That is how we must look at our strategic planning models, with the vision always being the center of attention."
