Hypothesis Testing with Two Samples

 

Hypothesis testing can be carried out with one or two samples.  Testing with two samples helps us to determine differences between the parameters of the populations.  Even though steps for hypothesis testing are followed, there is always chance for error, and that will of course have consequences.

Your task for this is to find a real world example of hypothesis testing with two samples. Provide a synopsis of the study. Describe any abuses that you observed in the study.

 

An example is illustrated in your text on page 479. A study was conducted on 2 groups of 4 year olds. The behaviors of the two samples were compared between children who attended preschool and children who stayed home with a parent (1 group stayed home and the other group attended preschool).

 

In the study, aggressive behavior, such as stealing toys, pushing other children, and starting fights, was targeted in both groups. In conclusion, it was determined that children who attended preschool were three times more likely to be aggressive then children who stayed home. As a result, these statistics persuaded parents to keep their children home until they started kindergarten. In a follow up study, another group determined the opposite conclusion.

 

From the two studies, we observe that abuses/biases can play a role. For one, the first study was performed by a mother of a support group. So, the outcome favored their group.

 

Other factors may have played a role in determining the outcome of the study as well. One factor is the actual population sample. If the children in first study lived in poverty or came from abusive environments, this could account for their aggressive behavior. When obtaining samples it is important to rule out as many variables as possible. The pool of children used for both samples needed to be screened to rule out these variables.

 

Your task for this is to find a real world example of hypothesis testing with two samples. Provide a synopsis of the study. Describe any abuses that you observed in the study.
