                                   Midterm Essay, Humanities, Fall,  2013

PAPER MUST BE TYPED AND DOUBLE-SPACED.

LENGTH: 3 – 4 PAGES

Topic:  Analyze the truth and logic of 3 arguments from 3 different writers.

Focus on 3 ARGUMENTS FROM 3 WRITINGS WE HAVE READ:

            Plato, "The Apology"

            Thucydides, "The Melian Dialogues"

            Freud-Einstein, "Why War?"

You must discuss the strength and the weakness of each argument.

To do this you will use our critical reading sheet.  Therefore, you are discussing whether or not the argument is uninformed or misinformed, illogical or incomplete.  (Notice the definitions of these terms. Plug each definition into a specific example from the text.)  You must also consider the truth and the significance of the argument.

FORMAT:

PARAGRAPH ONE:  INTRODUCTION.

All these writers are focusing on a crime and a punishment.    Briefly summarize the essence of the writer’s   position on this topic.

PARAGRAPH TWO.  First Writer. Plato. Give a  QUOTE FROM THE TEXT illustrating his point of view.     Argue both the strength and the weakness of this quote.  Conclude with your view on whether or not this   argument is true and how you’ve decided that.  (Compare with sample argument on Critical Reading Sheet.

PARAGRAPH THREE. Second Writer. Thucydides.  Follow the same directions.

PARAGRAPH FOUR.  Third Writer. Freud or Einstein. In this case, the crime AND punishment is war and       the arguments focus on why war becomes a choice that people make. Focus on the strength and weakness of           one of these arguments.

PARAGRAPH FIVE.  Conclusion.

You have now examined the logic and truth/significance  of 3 arguments. Overall, which argument was the most significant for you personally?  Why?  Relate this argument to a specific goal or issue of your life.  What new insight did this argument give you?  Why will you remember it?

PLEASE NOTE:  THIS PAPER REQUIRES A MINIMUM OF THREE QUOTES IN THE BODY OF THIS PAPER—ONE FROM EACH SELECTED WORK.
