Project #14081 - discussion questions management science

1. Queueing Theory - Question A

Chapter 11 of our text is all about queueing theory, the area of managerial decision science involving the analysis of waiting lines. Central to this body of knowledge are several mathematical relationships that can be used to determine performance Chapter 11 of our text is all about queueing theory, the area of managerial decision science involving the analysis of waiting lines. Central to this body of knowledge are several mathematical relationships that can be used to determine performance measures for waiting lines.

Please provide one such example of these performance measures. If possible, please also explain (in your own words) how a manager might use the measure to improve operational effectiveness or efficiency.

2. QUEUEING THEORY: QUESTION B:

First-come, first-served waiting line discipline is often assumed in the systems described in Chapter 11. Describe two circumstances (business situations) where first-come, first-served discipline is NOT applicable.

3. Whats Happening? Wrap Up

Last week's discussion of the "What's Happening?" case was, in my opinion, VERY productive. Though I realize that some of you might be intrigued by this opinion, I mean it sincerely.

We discussed the difference between sales and demand (a difference I think now probably makes more sense to all) and we also continued our discussion of stockouts.

Truly, in the presence of stockouts, no forecasting technique will work well. In fact, most will fail miserably,

Please review the posts made to last week's discussion board. Then respond to one or more of the following prompts.

1.) Using a numeric example, please explain why the "downward spiral" in this case is a mathematical certainty. (How exactly is it related to the stockouts?)

2.) To prevent stockouts from occurring in the future, what should Michael do? (We know he needs to stock more papers to meet his demand levels but how should

he determine the amount of additional papers needed at each location where stockouts occur?)
