materialism and culture

What is the “sacred cow” of the culture of capitalism?

Requirements:

·       1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of Marvin Harris's materialist approach to the study of sacred objects of religious worship and/or religious taboos.

·       2. Express a clear opinion about an object that it worshipped in the culture of capitalism (e.g. Canadian society) in a manner analogous (or highly similar) to the way Harris argued that cows are worshipped by Hindu peasants across rural India.

·       3. Support your answer with knowledge, facts and evidence about the way the capitalist economic system works and the way capitalism influence or shapes the way of life in societies with economies organized around capitalist principles.

·       Style: This is an argumentative essay. It should be formal in tone. Avoid contractions and colloquialisms. You can write in the first person. There are no right or wrong answers to the question posed. Do not take the word "sacred" literally. State your answer clearly and then defend it. Use your knowledge of Canadian society. You will be evaluated based on how well you understand materialism and capitalism and how well you support your answer with material drawn from the course.
