Project #14943 - Calculus

  1. Create a table that gives the computed values for at least 5 points and choose t values that are evenly spaced.
  2. Observe any patterns or relationships in the numeric data (common growth factor or decay factor evidenced by dividing subsequent y values).
  3. Use your observations to write a formula that describes the data (y = a * bt).
  4. Use technology to graph your exponential function and sketch it (scale the axes) by hand.
  5. Use your formula to answer the given question (if applicable, write the equation that you need to solve using the "intersection" command on your graphing calculator; next week, we will learn algebraic methods for solving exponential equations).  Include units and round to 2 decimals (nearest hundredth) where appropriate.

Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5730 years. If a substance initially contained 6 grams of C-14 and it now has .12 grams, how old is the substance? Why do you think carbon-14 is a good element to date fossils?
