# Project #15425 - Statistics

A study evaluated whether an experimental genetic treatment can increase litter size (the number of offspring) of sows (female pigs). 30 sows were chosen from a pig research facility. 10 were randomly assigned to receive the genetic treatment; the remaining 20 served as controls. The size of each sow's first litter was recorded. The data are summarized below.

Control            Experiment

Mean              10.3                 10.7

s.d.                  2.4                   1.5

n                      20                    10

We usually use the sample mean to estimate the population mean. Therefore, the mean of the litter size of control population is estimated to be 10.3 and mean of experiment population is estimated to be 10.7. Which population has a more precisely estimated mean litter size based on their sample? What parameter you will use to answer this question? Show your calculation and your conclusion.
