Project #15458 - Argumentative Essay

ENC 1102                                           Research Paper

What

You will write a persuasive research paper for this course.  The topic is open, provided there is enough information available to write a paper of the appropriate length. For example, skateboarding is a viable topic; instructions for putting together a board is not. You need something broad enough to allow room for speculation, yet specific enough to keep your paper from going all over the place in random tangents. If you cannot conceive a topic, let me know and I will help.

Why

The purpose of this assignment is to illustrate both your command of writing techniques as well as your ability to research information.  You must be able to smoothly integrate the new information with your own words to form a polished whole.  It should incorporate aspects of your research along with your own input into the subject. I do not want you to recite everything you learned from your research; that is a book report. Instead, I want you to use your research to formulate a theory or idea about your topic. For example, you could write about the fact that while skateboarding owes a huge debt to Hawaiian surfing, the associated hierarchy and class standing has been lost over time (not to mention across the ocean) and then you could explain why this shift indicates a positive change for the future of skateboarding in this country.  In other words, use the history to prove your point rather than just tell me the history. Remember that you must use your research to PERSUADE readers to agree with you.

How

You will write a 7-8 page paper on a single topic. You will begin by writing a thesis statement that reflects the overall theme of your paper.  You will research the chosen topic at the library or online and secure outside sources for your paper.  You must have at least 5 sources; only two of these may be online (non-journal, etc.).

You will create an Annotated Bibliography according to MLA format of works that you have consulted for research.  You will then draft an outline that shows what you will be talking about in the paper, when and where you would be incorporating quotes, when and where you will be addressing this or that aspect of the topic, etc. Then, you will write the paper.  You will bring 2 copies to class on the due date; one for me and one for a classmate to respond to.  You will take both my response and that of your classmate to aid in revision.  You will turn in the revised paper along with a Works Cited page that follows the MLA format (along with the copy I corrected initially) on the due date.

Also send me first draft and outline of what you write
