Project #16426 - Essay Prompt

General Info on Homework Assignments

These writing assignments are essays, not papers with definite right and wrong answers.  You will be given a prompt followed by several points I'd like you to address.  An essay will always contain the opinion of the author, but opinion by itself is not enough.  You need to back up your opinion with relevant facts and information that supports the position you are taking.  You’ll need to do some research for this. How well you support your position with facts and logic will determine your scores for these assignments.  If you cannot adequately support your opinion on your own, do some research and find a quote or some factual information to help you make your point.  That’s how essay writing works!

You may choose to do research either online or in the music library or use online sources.   If you make a direct quote from a source you must follow proper procedure giving credit to the original source (MLA, APA. style, etc.).  I do not require a bibliography or works cited page with these essays if you do not use a direct quote from one of your sources.

These essays should be 3 pages in length.  If you find you need more length you are probably over-doing the background info, if you need less you are definitely missing something.

Essay Prompt

Motown Records was something of an anomaly in the music business of the late 60’s and into the 70’s.  The company was entirely focused on singles (individual songs) and popularity (sales number) at a time when the rest of the music business was changing its focus to full albums and “artistic statements”.  This eventually cost Motown it’s status as a major record label and enticed Berry Gordy to sell the company in 1988.

Albums continued to be the primary focus of most rock artists from the mid 60’s to the late 90’s when digital music distribution systems (iTunes is the most prominent example) started to become popular and individual song sales once again became the “norm”.

What do you think caused the shift?  Was it musical or economic?  In other words did listeners really get tired of albums and only want to own 1 or 2 songs by an artist (musical reasons). OR did the business people find as they had in the early 60s, that they could make more profit on a few singles by a large number of acts than they could financing whole albums by self-indulgent “artists” (economic reasons)?

Since, the business models of the early 60s (and before that the same mind set of the 30s and 40s) is once again the dominant one in the pop music business.  Was the period of the dominance of the album (1967-1985 ±) merely an anomaly?  Could it (will it) happen again?  What social conditions might be needed to help this happen?

Is there a corollary between higher levels of real (deep) thought in society as a whole (not just higher education which, as you well know, may not engender deep thinking at all) and the album phenomenon?  Was the political and social upheaval of the mid 60s the reason?  Think about it and respond.  How much of a role did technology play in this shift?

In other words would the return to the business model of the early 60s and the dominance of the “single” still have happened without the internet?  How much of a role has this technology played in this shift?

Do you see a problem with the shift in focus away from albums particularly in the current economy?
