Project #17071 - linguistic

Assignment #3: due November 18/19, 2013

Carefully read the three articles posted on the portal. The authors of each article comment on a particular aspect of President Barak Obama’s language use.

  1. The New York Times Op-Ed piece by O’Connor and Kellerman entitled “The I’s have it”

  2. The Guardian piece by Stamper entitled “Obama didn’t use improper grammar. Cut him and other public figures a break”

  3. The posting by Dowling entitled “The most common grammatical mistake made by educated people”.

4.
Then write a letter to President Barak Obama himself. In your letter, you will describe what is being said about his grammar and offer your informed opinion about it. The structure of your letter should be as follows:

1st section: Make President Obama aware of the critiques about his grammar by summarizing what the authors discuss in the three pieces. In your summary, use correct linguistic terminology for the phenomena that the authors talk about. You will notice that the authors use some linguistic terms, but there are still some that they do not use. You should also mention the general attitude towards his non standard usage.

2nd section: Make some predictions about other non standard usage that President Obama likely uses. For this, you should consult the discussions we had in class about nonstandard use. Again, use the correct linguistic terminology for these cases and offer examples. Aim to discuss three different, but related usages.

3rd section: Offer your opinion about President Obama’s grammar use. Do you agree with any of the authors or none at all? Any position is fine, but you must support your opinion. You can use arguments proposed by the authors, or your own, or both.

LIN204H5F fall 2013 Instructor: M. Troberg Guidelines:

  1. Length: your letter should not exceed 400 words.

  2. Grammar: your letter should not contain any spelling, punctuation, or

grammar errors. To avoid this, run your work through a grammar and

    spelling checker.

  3. Form: your letter should be written in well-organized paragraphs, each with

    a topic sentence.

  4. Linking words: your writing should demonstrate how your ideas are linked

and how they logically progress. There are many ways to do this in English, but one effective way that we learned about in LIN204 is to use conjunctive adverbs and subordinating conjunctions. Please use at least 2 of each in your letter AND UNDERLINE THEM.

  5. Understanding: your letter should show that you understand the issues discussed in the articles, that you can frame them in an even more linguistic manner, and that you can expand on them.

  6. Opinion: your letter should also demonstrate that you are able communicate an informed opinion about non standard usage in English, situating yourself as a prescriptivist, a descriptivist, or somewhere in between.

  7. Plagiarism: this is another word for copying someone else’s words or ideas and passing them off as your own. This is a serious academic offense and cases of it are dealt with in an equally serious manner.

Consult the rubric for further details about how your assignment will be graded.

PLEASE ATTACH A COPY OF THE COVER SHEET & RUBRIC TO YOUR ASSIGNMENT. YOUR TEACHING ASSISSANT WILL GIVE YOU FEEDBACK DIRECTLY ON THE RUBRIC.

** Please type your assignment and indicate the word count at the bottom of the page. You should use 12 point New Times Roman font, double spaced.
