Because of advances in medical technology and genetic engineering, life expectancy around the world has increased and natural resources are used at much higher rate, creating an indirect environmental problem of scarcity that ultimately poses concerns about the fate of the human species.

Do you think future progress in the field of GE will make humans able to reproduce in a lab? What do you think are some possible large scale complications of GE?

I see valid reasons to develop genetic engineering to cure genetic disorders. For instance, imagine having an organ donor bank, where you can have our own organs cloned and stored in case we need them in the future. Our body will not reject them because of antibody incompatibility, and we would not have to wait for someone with our same blood type to die in order to have a chance for transplant.

However, GE comes with some drawbacks, such as stimulating insect resistance in GE crops, or developing allergic reactions from eating food genetically modified.


At what point should we stop pushing the boundaries of genetic engineering?

Genetic engineering or GE has been around since the early 70’s but in the 90’s where it actually blossomed and scientists implementing it through crop plants for food.  After that, it turned to animals by cloning them or modifying their genetic structure and now, production of human organs to use for transplants are being conducted within laboratories. Some benefits of GE could potentially help humanity in many ways.  According to Locke and Yurkiewicz (2008) that genetically engineered microbes could help cure illnesses, produce renewable fuels, and could also make your clothing glow in the dark.  Another benefit is through agriculture where crops such as corn and soy are resistant to pests or herbicides.  In addition, according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration or FDA that most GE animals are still early in development however Scientists are developing GE animals to many applications such as produce pharmaceuticals to be used for other animals and humans, decrease in environmental impacts of agricultural practices, and provide more healthful or more efficiently produced food. 

     According to Union of Concerned Scientists, the potential risks of GE fall into two categories and they are risks to human health and environmental impacts.  The crops that mixed with other genes of different plant species such as soybeans mixed with Brazil nuts gene may affect and transfer the unwanted trait to the soybeans thus it may cause health problems.  Crops that are genetically engineered could cause environmental problems because it may become invasive or toxic to wild life.  Some GE crops are now pesticide resistant resulting of the use of harmful chemicals just to get rid the invasive GE crop.

      My personal thoughts of genetic engineering are somewhat neutral.  I think that genetic engineering could be very beneficial.  I believe that as long as genetic engineering is being utilized to the benefit of humanity and to better the world.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration are involved with the development with genetic engineered animals.  Some of the goals of developing genetically engineered animals.  The department works with other federal agencies such as Department of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Agency in regulating genetically engineered animals.
