Week 1 DQS due on 3 December 2013

Hypotheses in Homeland Security.  Possibly the most important step in the research process, yet one that it is routinely overlooked, is hypothesis development. This is the key to successfully identifying and then addressing a research topic. An example of homeland security research hypotheses has been developed in the document “Why have we not been attacked again? Competing and complementary hypotheses for homeland attack frequency.” Choose one of the hypotheses identified in this homeland security document between pages 35 and 141. Read the 3-4 page discussion of this hypothesis and then identify which hypothesis you selected. Explain if you believe the hypothesis you selected is a) declarative b) directional in relationship and c) specific (as described on pages 29-31 in the course text). Conclude by assessing whether or not you believe this is a good hypothesis for research.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Literature Review.  Conducting a thorough and systematic literature review is a critical first step in evaluating one’s research hypothesis. An example of a literature review for a homeland security research topic is the document “Understanding Community Resilience in the Context of National Health Security: A Literature Review.”  This literature review is comprehensive and shows how professional researchers systematically conduct their review. Beginning on pages 4-5 the researchers describe their literature review methodology; in Appendix A on pages 33- 34 they show the method they used for selecting key information in their literature review. Explain the literature review technique used by the researchers for this article on national health security.  Identify at least two techniques found in your text that are also used in this literature survey. Do you think this literature review was successful in achieving its goal?

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Week 2 DQS Due on 10 December 2013

Quantitative versus Qualitative.  The biggest decision you make in developing your research design is determining how you will gather data and what approach you will take to conduct your research.  Research methods are usually categorized as being either quantitative or qualitative. Explain the difference between quantitative and qualitative methods. Identify which method of research you believe is most useful in homeland security research.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Sampling in Homeland Security Research.  Developing good research requires the establishment of a sample that is representative of the population you are evaluating. Using the online Ashford Library databases, identify an article that selects a sample from which research is conducted using ethical principles. Briefly describe what type of sample the research utilizes and what methods they use to collect the sample. Determine if you think this is a representative sample and if you think the methods used to get the sample were scientific and ethical.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Week 3 DQs due on 17 December 2013

Evaluating Surveys.  Surveys are common and often are effective techniques for conducting homeland security research because practitioners within the homeland security architecture are often spread over great distances. Go to the Ashford Online Library and identify a survey used in a homeland security-related article.  Post an APA citation for the article you discovered that utilizes a survey to illuminate opinions or research on homeland security. Describe how the survey was designed, how the questions were constructed, and how the results were tabulated. Then state, in your opinion, if there are any biases in the survey’s questions or collection methods.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Visualizing Data.  Oftentimes, the way data is visualized and presented is more influential than the research itself. To demonstrate and evaluate this theory, you will watch a visualization of data. Visit and watch the presentations by Dr. Hans Rosling entitled Hans Rosling shows the best stats you’ve ever seen. Hans Rosling describes how international data trends on health can affect the security of nations. Identify at least two types of charts and tables that Dr. Hans Rosling uses to illustrate his data, and answer the following questions:

Do Dr. Rosling’s research findings become more or less clear with the use of his visualization techniques?

What are some potential weaknesses you find with using Dr. Rosling’s visualization techniques?

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Week 3 assignment due on 22 December 2013

Comparing Homeland Security Research Products.  Since the attacks of 9/11/2001 and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, there have been massive amounts of homeland security research and information created. Now that you have studied the design and execution of research, you will compare and contrast two homeland security research products and evaluate their effectiveness.   First, read and evaluate the research of the New York Police Department’s report: “Radicalization in the West: The Homegrown Threat.” Read and evaluate the executive summary on pages 5-14. This report examines the incidence of homegrown terrorists within the borders of the U.S.    Next, read and evaluate the research of the Department of Homeland Security report: “Rightwing extremism: Current economic and political climate fueling resurgence in radicalization and recruitment.” This report provides an assessment of the threat of homegrown extremism from right wing groups.

Conduct a comparative analysis of these two homeland security research reports. Use this general outline to conduct your case study analysis:

  a.  Introduction: Provide a brief overview of the dates and facts of the two reports and their purposes. (1/2 page)

b.  Analysis: NYPD Radicalization Report-Executive Summary (1 Page)

What was the research question being addressed?

What literature was reviewed in support of this research?

What type of research methods were used in developing this research and subsequent report?

Were the methods quantitative or qualitative?

How was the research collected for the report?  Did the report use existing data, surveys, etc.?

c.  Analysis: Were the report conclusions and analysis supported by the research and data presented in the report?

d.  Compare and Contrast: (1 page)

Which report provided the best analysis?

What report used the best research methodology to gather its data?

What were the weaknesses of these two reports in their research methods?

What other research methods do you believe might improve either reports effectiveness?

Do you agree with the analysis of these two reports?

The paper must be three to four pages in length and formatted according to APA style. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar, in your online course.

Week 4 DQs due on 24 December 2013

Homeland Security Statistics.  Examine the role of statistics in homeland security research using the Department of Homeland Security’s website.  Search for and identify a homeland security report that utilizes a frequency distribution to create a histogram. Explain what the report is and what the histogram represents. Annotate the variables that are being represented in the histogram and whether they are nominal, ordinal or interval/ratio variables. Provide a citation to the data report that you chose from the DHS website. Support your thoughts and ideas with appropriate resources.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Correlation and Association.  In Chapter 17 of the course text the authors discuss two coefficients: Association and Correlation. Explain what each of these terms mean in statistical analysis.  Describe how these two coefficients differ. Conclude by stating which coefficient you believe is most useful in describing relationships between research variables.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Week 5 DQ due on 31 December 2013

Focus Groups in Homeland Security Preparation.  Focus groups are a commonly used qualitative research tool for examining homeland security research issues. Chapter 20 of the textbook discusses several steps that must be addressed in the conduct of a focus group. The article Developing a Disaster Preparedness Campaign Targeting Low-Income Latino Immigrants:  Focus Group Results for Project PREP utilizes focus groups to conduct research. Explain how focus group participants were recruited, how the focus group data was collected, and how the results were analyzed. Assess whether you believe if, and where, any bias may have been recorded in this process. Also address whether you think the results of these samples were representative of the Latino population.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

Elite Interviews.  Chapter 21 of the course text discusses the interviewing of elites as a qualitative research technique. However, there are many that challenge the notion of elite interviewing as a valid and reliable research technique. Identify at least two reasons that elite interviewing may not be a sound qualitative research technique in homeland security research. Hypothesize why this technique may be particularly weak in the modern homeland security environment.

Your initial post should be at least 250-300 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.
