Project #17929 - Stats Lab

Use data from the OECD Dataset (posted on the course website) to answer the following questions in a separate lab report. All labs must be typed. Labs should be double-spaced, using a 12 point font. Please write in essay format, but also indicate which questions you are answering (number them). When including tables, make sure that they are neat and organized. Use the associated R functions to calculate your answers. Spelling, grammar, style, and mechanics will be graded, so make sure to proofread. Attach your R Output to your lab report as an Appendix.

  1. Describe the data that you will be analyzing. What countries does the dataset include? What is your sample size?

  2. Summarize the following variables using the appropriate measures of central tendency and dispersion. For interval-ratio variables you should include the mean, median, and standard deviation. For nominal and ordinal variables you should include frequencies and percentages. Use tables to present your summary measures and include a brief written description of the variables with your tables. Variable names are in parentheses.

    (a) Income inequality (inc.ineq) (b) Infant mortality (infant)

    (c) Incarceration rate (incarc) (d) Life expectancy (life)

    (e) Per capita government social spending (spend.per.cap) (f) Welfare regime (regime)

Bivariate Measures of Association

  1. Is there a relationship between the level of income inequality and the infant mortality rate across OECD countries? Create a scatterplot to visualize the relationship between inequality and infant mortality. Then conduct a bivariate regression to answer this question. Compute and report the slope (b), the intercept (a), r, and r2. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - inc.ineq, infant

  2. Is there a relationship between the level of income inequality and the incarceration rate across OECD countries? Create a scatterplot to visualize the relationship between inequality and incarceration. Then conduct a bivariate regression to answer this question. Compute and report the slope (b), the intercept (a), r, and r2. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - inc.ineq, incarc

  3. Is there a relationship between the level of income inequality and the average life expectancy across OECD countries? Create a scatterplot to visualize the relationship between inequality and life expectancy. Then conduct a bivariate regression to answer this question. Compute and report the slope (b), the intercept (a), r, and r2. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - inc.ineq, life

  4. Is the level of income inequality associated with the amount a government spends on social services across OECD countries? Create a scatterplot to visualize the relationship between inequality and per capita government social spending. Then conduct a bivariate regression to answer this question. Compute and report the slope (b), the intercept (a), r, and r2. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - inc.ineq, spend.per.cap

  5. Does the amount a government spends on social services differ by a country’s welfare regime? Is the average per capita spending on social services the same across liberal, conservative, rudimentary, and social democratic welfare regimes? Use a boxplot and an ANOVA test to determine whether per capita spending varies by welfare regime. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - spend.per.cap, regime

  6. Does the level of income inequality differ by a country’s welfare regime? Is the 20:20 income ratio the same across liberal, conservative, rudimentary, and social democratic welfare regimes? Use a boxplot and an ANOVA test to determine whether per capita spending varies by welfare regime. Write a short paragraph interpreting the results of your analysis and the relationship between these variables. Variables - inc.ineq, regime
