Project #17970 - Law/Medical

A 17-year-old girl is in a coma, her breathing and nutrition supported by medical devices, after a car accident. The medical staff has concluded that there is not substantive brain activity occurring and give a grim prognosis of no recovery. Her mother has custody. Her father has had limited contact with his daughter for years. Many schoolmates and a current teacher report that the girl eloquently described her preference not to be kept alive if there was no chance of recovery. The class had discussed the Terry Schiavo case in depth over a course of a few days. The mother refuses to remove her daughter from life supports, but the father supports the removal.
