Project #18149 - Statistics

1. There is a 0.723 probability that a random selected AA flight will arrive on time. Six AA flights are randomly selected.

a) What are the two outcomes, and which is the success outcome. What is the success rate?

b) What is the number of trials (n)?

c) Find the probability that exactly five flights out of six will arrive on time. Please identify the number of success first.

d) Find the probability that at least 5 out of 6 AA flights arriving on time. Is it unusual? (Based on your stat knowledge, you should know that unusual means that the probability < 0.05)

e) Let’s formulate it into a test. Let’s say the AA company claims their on time rate is higher than 0.723. We random sampled 6 flights and 5 are on time. Please test their claim using this sample.

Hypothesis

Probability calculation

Conclusion

f) Please use R to do the test in e).

2. The severe drought of 1987 in the U.S. affected the growth rate of established trees. It is thought that the majority of the trees in the affected areas each have a 1987 growth ring that is smaller than the size of the tree’s other growth rings, A sample of 20 trees is collected and 15 have this characteristic. Do their data support the claim?

a) What are the two outcomes? Which one you choose as “success”?

b) What is the number of success, and number of trials?

d)  What is the success rate (p) based on the null hypothesis?

e). Please use R code to test the above hypothesis.

f). Please use hand calculation of the binomial test.
