Your paper should be at least 5 typed pages in length. It should be double-spaced, use 12- point font, Times or Times New Roman, have standard margins (1-1.25 inch), and incorporate at least 5 scholarly sources.

The research process involves case selection, topic selection, identifying a research question, making a proposal, making an annotated bibliography, writing an outline, writing a draft, revision, and completion.

1. Case Selection. The first step is to choose a country to focus on. Select a developing country you are interested in.

2. Topic Selection. Propose a topic or issue that will be the focus of your research. Choose a particular challenge -- democratization, human rights, development, ethnic conflict, etc. – that the country faces.

3. Question Selection. Identify your research question about the topic you selected.

4. Paper Proposal. Write the following:

   Working title

   Research question

Working thesis: In a short paragraph, draft a tentative thesis for your paper.

Write what you are trying to explain or claim (that is, an answer to your research

   question).

Research resources: Create a preliminary list of published sources

   5. Writing an Outline. The outline should contain an introduction, body, conclusion, and list of references. The introduction should include a statement regarding the topic of the paper (i.e., the focus of the paper). It should also present your research question and provide your answer to the question (your thesis). The body of the outline should be organized around your major themes as suggested by your research questions. In the conclusion, summarize your thesis. You could also address things like a final concluding question (e.g., "what needs to be done?") and issues that have not been resolved by the analysis, future lines of inquiry,

   6. Draft. Based on the outline, draft a paper. Make sure the introduction clearly introduces the topic, your research questions, and your thesis.

7. Revision. Make sure you revise your paper many times before submitting the final version
