1. Controlling Sound in an Enclosed Space

a) Describe and illustrate the theory and application of absorptive materials in an enclosed space.
Specific detail should be given to:
i) the fundamental interaction of sound waves with absorption (energy transfer, friction, absorption coefficient)

ii) typesofabsorption(porous,membrane,Helmholtz)

(750-1000 word guide)

b) With reference to the room in Appendix B Fig.1, which is to be used as a mixing audio space; you are to propose, illustrate and justify the placement of materials and specific acoustic treatment in order to improve the acoustic performance of the space, taking careful note of the listening position.

The room in Fig.1 has the following acoustic characteristics in the listening position:

1. A significant modal issue at 94Hz and 66Hz
2. Flutter echo from the side walls, ceiling and floor 3. A significant problem of a direct reflection from the

back wall to the listening position

All justifications must be supported by research, actual acoustic products and associated acoustic data of the products.

Acoustic products to consider for the room could be:

  • Absorbers (thickness, mounting)

  • Bass traps (porous, membrane, Helmholtz)

  • Diffusers (geometric, grating)

  • Other materials (carpets, curtains, wood) (750-1000 word guide)

     

    c) Describe and illustrate the theory and measurement of reverberation time in an enclosed space, and then determine the RT60 (T20) at 500Hz and 4kHz of the provided impulse response file of a space.

    Analyze the results to state what space/purpose the RT60 times would be suited to.
