Marking Criteria

(The marks for each criterion are to illustrate where the main effort should be spent and are not meant to be a strict marking scheme)

Presentation                                        10%

Analysis                                              60%

Structure                                             10%

Use of supporting evidence                10%

(news & academic references)

Style of writing                                   10%

Please remember that an assignment is not meant to DESCRIBE what you have found.  Analysis means commenting on your findings and EXPLAINING what the evidence suggests about the companies.

General Guidance to students

Structure

Ø  The introduction should be brief.  It is not meant to provide a history of Samsung

Ø  Use the first three questions in the assignment brief to structure the report findings

Ø  The Conclusion needs to draw the analysis to a close and comment on the sustainability of Samsung’s strategic position.  Remember you do not introduce new findings into the Conclusion

Ø  If you include Appendices you must refer to them in the relevant section of the report findings

Ø  References should clearly list all the material that has been referred to in the report and set out as follows:

Models/Content

Ø  Remember to use the models in a ‘dynamic’ way i.e. place relevant examples onto the models.  Do not simply copy and paste ‘generic’ examples from the lecture slides

Ø  Words in the models are not included in the word limit.  HOWEVER, the models lose their value if they are full of text.  They should aid understanding not confuse the reader because too much has been stuffed into them

Ø  Models should be included in the main body of the report.  Only place them in the appendices if they are close to a full page

Ø  You may well refer to points made in earlier parts of the report to show the connections in the analysis.  However, do not try to force connections e.g. all points in the PEST and 5 Forces models do not need to be directly linked, they are looking at separate things, though examples in the PEST will inform drivers in the 5 forces,

Ø  You will struggle to stay within the word limit so focus on the KEY DRIVERS in your analysis

Ø  You will not be able to use all of the examples if you have done the level of reading required so ‘cherry pick’ those that best illustrate the key drivers

Ø  Facts and figures need to be supported with sources clearly referenced.

Business Strategy Assignment Structure – Samsung Smartphones

THE REPORT:

The following is an indication of the structure which your assignments could follow:

Introduction:

·       Including background to the industry, company and the report to follow (should be brief but informative)

Identify the organisation’s strategic position:

·       Analyse the types of strategies which the company is following and what their strategic position is in relation to the competition. There should be some comment/analysis of the organisations strategic position. The types of analysis that can be used are:

o   Porters Generic Strategies;

o   The Strategy Clock;

o   Strategic Group Mapping.

How do the key external drivers of change affect the organisation?

·       Analysis of the external environment and identify the key drivers for change which affect Samsung:

o   PEST/PESTLE Analysis;

o   Porters 5 Forces Industry Analysis.

How does the organisation add value to its strategic position?

·       Analyse ways in which the organisation adds value to its products and its strategic position:

o   Resource Audit;

§  Tangible/Intangible Resources;

§  Resource/Competence Framework

o   Value Chain Analysis.

How sustainable is the strategic position? (This is the conclusion of the analysis)

From all the analyses carried out above, your conclusion needs to draw together the main points and state whether, according to the analysis, the strategic position of Samsung is sustainable. Please note that this is the conclusion. No new material should be included at this stage. This section is a summary of the main points of the rest of the report, leading to a comment on the sustainability of the strategic position.

Please remember that an assignment is not meant to DESCRIBE what you have found.  Analysis means commenting on your findings and EXPLAINING what the evidence suggests about the companies.

GENERAL GUIDANCE:

Where possible, your findings and analysis should be supported by references from credible sources such as:

·       Newspaper reports (from newspapers, such as the Times, Independent, Financial Times, Telegraph, Observer, Guardian, etc) these can be accessed in either paper format of

  • Academic Journal Articles;
  • Books;
  • Company and industry reports;
  • Company websites;
  • Government reports and websites;
  • Credible news website (BBC News, Reuters, etc)

The references you provide may not need to be directly related to Samsung. For instance, the effect of global recession could be talked about and referenced from news articles about how the recession has affected organisations generally rather than Samsung specifically.

If you are unsure about referencing, please refer to the USW Harvard Referencing guide, which can be found at:
