This week, we are going to look at a few different sections of the book to help with choosing your topic for your final research essay. Choose one research activity from page 287.
- Economics: Chapter 10 (p 289)
- Sociology Chapter 11 (p 340)
- Philosophy Chapter 12 (p 408)
- Environment: Chapter 13 Green Power, (p 478)
- Business Chapter 14 Advertising (p 548)
- Psychology: Chapter 15 (p 619)
The Internet offers a wealth of material on the subject of climate change and green power and, found within this unit, are some video links pertaining to the material.
This week, you will also be finishing up your Explanatory Synthesis. I know that the Synthesis essay may be a new type of writing for you, but note that your textbook can provide you with some excellent guidance, and if you've written a research paper before, then you have done synthesis writing before. The textbook provides essential and helpful advice in regards to organizing a synthesis: Don't organize by a series of source summaries, but rather by ideas and references to the relevant parts of multiple sources. Exercise 4.3 gives you an opportunity to revise the draft yourselves before examining how the revisions were handled in the model paper. As with all the model papers, the highlighted thesis statement and topic sentences emphasize how these elements create a clear, strong structure. The model synthesis also provides examples of how to incorporate quotations and use in-text citations appropriately.
Best of luck this week - let me know if you have any questions.
- Continue working on shaping a thesis statement and executing its defense
- Discuss the effects of Global Warming and defend a position based on your views.
