Project #21992 - Masculinity as Homophobia

Part 1: Choose a passage from “Masculinity as Homophobia” in which you can identify a possible problem (tension, contradiction, ambiguity). I recommend avoiding passages that summarize the author’s ideas. Instead, look for passages that invite further exploration—these passages often present evidence that necessitates interpretation, loaded terms and controversial claims. Most importantly, choose a passage that matters to you, one that incited a strong response from you. Our writing is much better when we write about something we care about.

Re-read the passage you have selected as well as the text as a whole. As you read the passage, consider again the words, phrases and concepts that strike you and make note of why they strike you.

Consider the author’s rhetorical moves in the passage. How does the author construct his or her argument? How do these rhetorical moves affect your reading of the text?

Read the entire essay with an eye to how your selected passage contributes to the overall argument in the essay. Look for additional evidence throughout the text and consider how it supports or enhances your analysis.

Part 2: In 500-700 words (about two pages), explore a potential problem you have located in the passage from the author's text.

Your problem should be rooted in one or two passages from the text, and then you should consider how your close reading of that passage contributes to your understanding of the whole text.

Attempt to make a claim with regard to the problem you have identified

Establish a motive for your argument. What is at stake if we don’t grapple with the problem you are pursuing? How will understanding this problem contribute to our overall understanding of the text? Utilize writing as a mode of learning. Feel free to take chances with this draft as you discover the problem you are trying to articulate. Don’t get caught up on word choice, structure or grammar. Use this draft to answer the question, “What am I trying to say?”
