Read Making the Connection and Analyzing the Organization: Design Module #1 attachedin the end of this paper.  Choose an organization Safeway (abbreviated “CO”) you would like to study for the duration of the term.  For each assignment you will answer the questions below as they relate to your chosen organization (Safeway).

Assignment 1 – One Page


1.     What is the name of the CO?

2.     What kind of “value” does the CO create?

3.     Approximately how many people does the CO employ?

4.     How many levels are there in the CO’s hierarchy?

5.     Is the CO’s structure tall or flat?

6.     Based on what you learned in chapter 6, what kind of structure (functional, product division, multidivisional, etc) does the CO use and why?

7.     Identify the socialization tactics used to influence a newcomer’s role orientation.  Is the CO encouraging an institutionalized role orientation or an individualized role orientation?


Assignment 2 – One Page


1.     Describe the CO’s organizational domain.

2.     What core competencies give the CO a competitive advantage?

3.     What are the CO’s functional-level strategies?

4.     What is the CO’s business-level strategy:  low cost or product differentiation?

5.     In what ways do your CO’s structure and culture match its strategy?

6.     Is the CO operating in more than one domain?  If it is, what corporate-level strategies is it pursuing?



Assignment 3 – One Page


1.     Does revolutionary or evolutionary best describe the changes that have been taking place in the CO?  Briefly describe some of those changes.

2.     Have recent efforts to make organizational change been successful?  Why or why not?  What were the obstacles to change?

3.     What organizational development techniques did the CO use?  Which were the most successful in managing change?
