Project #22852 - Marginal Value theorem

1. Imagine that you are foraging for fruit and each patch in the environment has the following cumulative gains curve. Each cell on the x- axis represents 5 minutes. Each cell on the y – axis equals 50 calories. If the average time between patches is 70 minutes, how long should you stay in the patch in order to maximize return rates? What is the return rate at that point?

There is a graph for this

Optimal Diet Breadth Pronghorn Sheep Jackrabbit Marmot Woodrat Units Kcal per item 1000 2000 90 100 50 kcal Search time per item 200 500 25 30 15 min Handling time per item 90 120 10 10 8 min

2. Use the data above. Use Excel to determine the profitability for each type. Rank each prey type. Assume 100 minutes of search. What is the encounter rate for each type (encounters per min)? Determine the overall return rate for each iteration of the model (diet includes only first ranked, then first and second, then first second and third, etc.). Determine the optimal diet. Create a chart that shows the relationship between profitability and overall return rate as a function of each iteration. Please return the excel file as your answer. Please label your work clearly in the excel file.
