Unit 3 Assignment

For this lab assignment, you will use a simulation on the *ActivPhysics* section of the *Physics Place*website. Select activity ** 12.1 DC Series Circuits: Qualitative**, and run Applet 5.

Please see the figure below for directions on how to access the simulation.

The simulation allows you to build an electric circuit and calculate the amount of electric current that flows through it. You can add and remove bulbs (which represent resistances), wires, batteries (voltage sources), ampere meters, and voltmeters. Please see the figure below for directions on how to run the simulation and collect data for your report.

For your lab report, please address the following questions:

- What is the objective of this assignment?
- Is the circuit series or parallel? Explain?
- Replace the left and right vertical wires with one bulb each. What is the type of the new circuit?
- Set the voltage to 10 V and set the resistance of each bulb to 5 ohm. Determine the total resistance of this circuit (see the lecture on how to calculate total resistance). What is the current flowing through the circuit (use the
**calculate**button to determine the value of the current). - You are going to collect data to represent the variation of current as a function of the total resistance of the circuit. To do that, you will remove the bulbs one at a time until there is onlyone bulb left. Each time you remove a bulb you will calculate the new total resistance and the new current.
- Record the resistance and current values calculated in questions 5, and load the numbers into a spreadsheet. Make a plot of the current
as a function of the total resistance**I**. (Remember that the**R**values will go on the x-axis and the**R**values on the y-axis)**I** - What type of curve do you get? Does the curve obey Ohm’s law?
- Write a short conclusion
