1LE 6.1 csr.The closed-loop principle seem to be a common theme in sustainability business because the thought of the system is to take wastes of one firm becomes the resources of others. Great cost savings can be found by looking to reduce and eliminate wastes. It's the same as someone's trash could be another treasure.

Self interest conflicts with moral considerations, and if one acts our of self interest one is by the fact is not acting morally. Business to fulfill  it's true purpose in a sustainable economy, doing the right thing coincides ethically with doing what is in the business's self interest. There is a huge market represented by billions of  human beings who face unmet needs on a daily basis. There are enormous opportunities waiting for the businesses to respond to this market. In the future businesses should implement a structure that waste is resourceful to meet a human need.

2 AL. The closed-loop principle seems to be a common theme in sustainable business because its primary goal is to produce the least (essentially zero) harmful side effects to the environment during production processes.  The basic tenant of the closed-loop design is that “byproducts formerly lost as waste and pollution must be eliminated, reintegrated into the production process, or returned as a benign or beneficial product to the biosphere”. (DesJardins, 2007, p. 93)  Business are recognizing that we are approaching a time when sustainability is no longer an option, it has become reality.  We are simply running out of resources to meet the demands of the consumer at the current rates and if businesses refuse to embrace a move towards sustainability, they may simply cease to exist.

This concept relates to human activity, the biosphere and how we should view business activity in the coming decades because although business will need to change its practices, we as consumers need to accept some responsibility and look at our consumption practices and their impact on the biosphere.  Change cannot be one-sided or left to only one party, it must be global, and it must be business and consumer if it has any chance of working.  The closed-loop principle in theory sounds great, but it will need the support of a multitude of industries to come together and recognize how they can all support each other, agree on how to “sell” each other their “waste”, etc., does anyone else see potential for problems here?  Again, I think this is a great idea, so much better than current practices, but not without pitfalls.

3 OS. The closed-loop principle is a common theme basically due to the nature of being sustainable and how this approach benefits recycling, and going green - using eco-friendly recycled products.

What this says is that we can make our biosphere better. Reducing, Recycling and Reusing -right from the last weeks case study, pulling methane from waste water, capture hot water to directly start the next batch of brew- examples of how it can be done. The one question is why are other companies not doing more of this type of environmentally aware operation.

4 rc. Why does the closed-loop principle seem to be a common theme in sustainable business? What does it say about the relationship between human activity and the biosphere and further about how we should view business activity in the coming decades?

The closed looped system is that system that uses left over raw materials and resources for re-use. A company that re-uses its waste products will be more efficient in a sustainable economy and it seems to be a common theme in sustainaility because it reduce waste and alo conserves resources. It does not rely on matter outside of the system. It is thereofre self balancing and self sustaining.

What this says about human acitivity and the biosphere is that we can control our activity in our own bisphere without sacrficing our needs. We should still be able to have quality products that satisfy our needs  that can be made in away that doesn't hurt the Earth and the biosphere in which we live.

In terms of business it says in years to come resources will have been preserved, while cost goes down and production increases to meet demand without harming the environment. It means that in 25 years, business will still be thriving because of the responsible way they chose to use this close looped system.
