Project #23324 - Essay 2

Create drafts and final essay in accordance with the dates listed in the assignment description.

Genre: Explication, sometimes called 'Analysis' by some instructors. The 'explication' genre attempts to get at the deeper level of a literary text by payingclose attention to the metaphors, symbols, language, imagery, rhythm, or sounds of a given poem, play, story, or novel. The writer of the explication attempts to give his reader deeper insight into the chosen literary text. You might find it useful to revisit the lecture on 'summary and interpretation.'
The thesis should make an arguable and specific claim about the deeper level of your chosen text. The paper should not be a summary. It should assume that the audience has read the text, and only use those parts of the text that help to explain and defend the interpretation that you have chosen. The thesis should make an arguable claim, and the paragraph topic sentences should give clear reasons for believing that claim. The paragraphs, after the paragraph topic sentence has introduced the subject, should explain and present evidence for supporting that particular claim about the text.

Length: This paper should be approximately 1000-1200 words. Many papers may be longer, and a few may even be shorter than this guideline. This is strictly an estimate of what it might take to write an engaged interpretation.

Rules and Regulations: The explication must be on a single story or poem that we have read thus far in this class. There must be a works cited list at the end that cites the text book we are currently using. In-text citationss and the work cited list must be in MLA format. Failure to do this properly may result in the deduction of a full letter grade. Do not do outside research for this assignment; you are expressly forbidden to look up anything about the story or poem you have chosen. Try to deal with the text on your own. Papers must be turned in to turnitin.com; papers that are not turned into that service by the deadline run the risk of not being graded at all.

A possible game plan for getting your paper done:

1. Saturday, February 15th: Check out this assignment. Decide on a story or a poem to write on; choose whatever you liked best. I would likely decide to write on "Mending Walls" by Robert Frost, so we'll go with that. Reread what you have chosen, in this case "Mending Walls." Spend the rest of the day watching college football and arguing with your boyfriend or girlfriend about whose turn it is to do the dishes.

2. Sunday, February 23rd (a week from tomorrow): Make a few notes about what the story or poem might mean. Write down a list of things in the poem or story that might be interesting. Things like a 'wall' and 'apple orchard' and 'pine trees' and 'yelping dogs' and 'stone-carrying savage.' Then brainstorm about what these things might mean for thirty minutes. Post a question asking your instructor to clarify a point about the assignment. Spend the rest of the day showing domestic partner how to do dishes (honestly, can't he do anything without supervision!?) before settling in for the Sunday night NFL game.

3. Monday (Feburary 24th): Use the notes to write a rough draft of your paper, or at least as much paper as you can get done in sixty minutes. Spend no more than sixty minutes on it, then help your kid with science project, or watch TV, or do both, the way my Dad did.

4. Tuesday (February 25th): Call up the draft again, and either complete it, or start a new draft.

5. Wednesday (February 26th): Review your draft, make some changes, fuss over it a bit, then post it to the peer-review exercise that we will be doing next week.

After that spend the rest of the week taking a look at what your student-readers have to say. Redraft the paper on Friday or Saturday (Feb 28 and March 1) and then make sure it is turned in to turnitin.com by March 2nd
