Week Seven

Chapter 13: Racial Profiling

THINGS TO KNOW FROM THE READING:

Ø  Define “racial profiling” and explain problems associated with using inconsistent definitions.

Ø  Identify seven approaches used in police departments to prevent racial profiling.

Ø  Discuss the rationale for and against collection of racial profiling data

Ø  Explain the differences between “racial profiling” and the legitimate use of “profiling” in law enforcement.

Ø  Discuss questions in Mini Case Studies: Culture and Crime (pg. 445-446).

Ø  What are the potential consequences of targeting criminal activity in an area of a community?

Ø  Have you personally (i.e., officers) encountered this response, that is—a direct accusation of racial profiling or an accusation of “suspicious activity” because of someone’s race?  How did you handle the situations with the citizens?  How effectively do you think you responded?

ASSIGNMENT #7: SUBMIT: Power Point/Research Paper: (5—10 pages)

Promoting Tolerance Programs: If your community has a Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum or Holocaust exhibit, you may attend for this assignment.  The Museum has been used by some police departments as a one-day experience to provide officers with tools to better serve their community, so some of you may have already attended.  If you do not have access to such an exhibit, an Anti-Defamation League (ADL) program awareness, “Tools for Tolerance,” may be accomplished by viewing the Power Points about the Holocaust or the American Civil Rights Movement.  Students must submit a power point about the links between history and issues of race, sex, and culture in present-day society, particularly as it exist in your work community. You must assess the cultural beliefs and prejudices.  This assignment does not teach any specific beliefs or behaviors—it simply invites awareness.  The assignment is aimed to help people of all races, creeds, colors, and ages confront their most closely held beliefs.  Please limit your power point slides to 20-25.  You must also submit a brief five page overview of you topic (APA Format) with the power point.
