Homework Assignment:  Description of Team or Group

Answer each of the following questions about the group dynamic of a specific team or group that you currently or previously served on within your organization. Please come to class prepared to discuss your responses and to offer and explanation of how your findings are either consistent or inconsistent with the theories contained in the textbook.

1.       Describe the nature of the organization, structure, output goals, etc.

2.       Describe the specific group/team within your organization as to its specific organizational purpose, i.e. permanent, temporary, cross-functional, project group, self managed, employee involvement team, or virtual group.

3.       Describe the diversity dimensions of the team.

4.       Describe the personality traits, values, and attitudes of the team members.

5.       Compare and contrast how group members perceive themselves versus how other key people or groups perceive them.

6.       Compare and contrast the various motivational theories as it relates to the motivation of this group.

7.       Compare/contrast your team to the stages of group development (forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning stages).

8.       Describe the roles and role dynamics of the team i.e. role ambiguity, role overload, role under load, and role conflict

9.       Overall, is the team a high performance team compared to the text model? (See OB Savvy 9.2) What should be done to improve the overall effectiveness of the team?

Read case study  C & S Wholesale Grocers: Self -Managed Teams (case attached)

Answer the following

1.       Why is Cohen worrying about his organization?

2.       What assumptions is Cohen making about organizational effectiveness and operational excellence?

3.       What are the goals for self-managed teams broadly and at C & S?

4.       What risks are associated with the transition from the status quo to a team focused organization?

 

5.       If you were Cohen and had decided to announce the transition to self-managed teams, what would you say to you employees? Be prepared to make this announcement to the class and outline a strategy for implementation.
