As your first experience using InDesign in an extended way, the assignment will acquaint you with the software’s capabilities and limitation while you produce a suite of real-world documents. Al- though each document is only 1 page in length, each poses rhetorical, aesthetic, and technical challenges that you must overcome for the more complex documents ahead. Notably, your challenge will be using InDesign in a way that demonstrates your familiarity with the online tutorials. This first project introduces you also to the inter-relationship between design principles and rhetorical purpose of documents in actual practice. You will produce a suite of documents (a letterhead, envelope, and business card) that use a consistent, unified design sometimes referred to as “visual identity” or “branding.” You visual identity will consist of a graphical element, a color scheme, and typographical con- sistency that unites all the documents. One of the documents you design will be an envelope that must be printed on a standard white #10 busi- ness envelop. This may be difficult for some of you who are not accustomed to manually feeding a docu- ment into a printer. However, you must learn the interfacing issues between your computer’s software (InDesign) and your computer’s hardware (your printer), as well as differences in what you see on the computer screen and what actually prints out onto paper. You will also articulate your learning by submitting an analysis memo.

VISUAL This assignment is designed to accomplish specific goals as your first production project:

Identity (branding)

While I encourage you to design your own business card and stationery, you may choose to find a client for whom you can produce the project documents. While this is not as immediate as designing your own docu- ments, working for a client can provide you with rhetorical and contextual constraints that will shape your approach and tailor it to a target audience.

ANALYSIS MEMO

Describing, analyzing, and justifying choices you make in creating a visual identity help you to be more pur- poseful and explicit about your design decisions. You will write an analysis to accompany your documents in which you articulate your choices and connect those choices with the theories you have learned through text- book readings and the InDesign software tutorials. Your memo should address the following questions:

1.What are each document’s rhetorical purpose and contextual constraints? For example, an envelope has the purpose of holding a document, it transports a document through the postal or other system, and it conveys in very specific areas on its surface information about both the recipient and the sender. All these functions pose certain constraints as to the kind of information placed on the document, the arrangement and placement of the information, and the size of informaion. The business card and letterhead serve dif- ferent purposes and therefore have different contraints. What are they?

2.What are the salient characteristics required of these seemingly simple documents? 3.What was your experience using the software? If you viewed the tutorials in sequence as suggested, you

should have all the tools you need to produce technically successful documents? 4.What gave you the most difficulty and why? (Talk about theorical or aesthetic challenges, or both.) 5.What about the project are you happiest about and why? Given more time, what would you do differently?

What would you keep the same?
