Project #25536 - anthropology assignment

Write a reflexive, yet critical anthropological essay on a relationship you have had, or continue to have, with a significant animal other. Focus on any sort of animal that has caused you to think deeply about the human/animal relationship (a farm animal, a wild animal encounter, a TV animal, a pet, a zoo animal, the yappy dog in the neighbourhood, and so on). Think about this personal relationship from an anthropological perspective. What were the social and cultural forces that shaped the character of your animal relationship? What was it about your position in life (your class, gender, age, social status or ethnicity) that influenced the relationship?

(Defn. Reflexivity, in this context, refers to the conscious appreciation of the influence of the researcher’s social position and history in the construction and interpretation of anthropological research. So ask yourself, what is it about me that causes me to interpret this particular interspecies social phenomenon in this particular way?)

Word Count is 1600 words

EXTRA INFORMATION

it is based on your own story and if you need to back it up with readings from anthropology you must use harvard referencing.

Psychology, health sciences, ethology, biology, history, philosophy and animal rights discourse and all inform an anthropological perspective, but they are not a substitute for an anthropological perspective. Always look for the social and cultural dimensions of the human/animal issue you are investigating

Here’s a couple of readings that may help you get inspired for your essay.  Two very different relationships with animals, but both incorporating a reflexive approach and showing ways in which the human-animal “story” at the heart of the account can open our thinking up to other social/cultural aspects.
