RESEARCH PAPER PROMPT FOR DR. CONNER’s SPRING 2014 CLASSES

You will be writing a 7-8 page research paper for this class. I will accept no less than 7 pages and no more than 10.

STEP 1: On March 26, you will discuss possible topics for your research paper in small groups with fellow classmates.

complete

STEP 2: On March 31, you & I will discuss the topic you have chosen in terms of its appropriateness (i.e. does it speak clearly to the parameters of this class; narrowing your topic; etc.)

complete topic Walt Whitman's poem America

STEP 3: Once you and I have agreed on a topic, begin researching your topic. You will need to use 5 sources (you may include your textbook/s). You will turn in a thesis statement concerning your topic and a list of your sources on April 9.

STEP 4: Write a sentence outline for your essay.  We will go over how to do this in class. Your outline will be due on April 23.

STEP 5: From your outline, write your essay. Your essay will be due on May 12. THIS IS THE CORRECT DATE; do not go by the syllabus, the date on this prompt is correct.

MAKE CERTAIN TO CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR WORK SHOWS EVIDENCE OF STUDYING THE 'THINGS TO REMEMBER' CHECKLIST I HAVE GIVEN YOU! I will count off for mistakes that should have been corrected by way of studying the checklist.

Your sources can include books, a scholarly articles (ask a librarian or myself if you need help in determining if sources meet this criteria or not), a website (YOU MAY NOT USE WIKIPEDIA OR ANY SIMILAR SITE!), and/or a DVD, CD, or computer game. A MIX OF THESE IS BEST!

You should have a cover page and a reference page (the last page of your paper).

Please use MLA format for references. Remember to reference EVERY quote or paraphrase so that you cannot be suspected of plagiarism. Quotes should be no less than 1 sentence in length and no more than 3-4. Use parenthetical referencing, such as "Artists of the twentieth century were extremely interested in portraying contemporary life (Bulgar, 295)."

PLAGIARIZED PASSAGES &/OR PLAGIARIZED ESSAYS WILL RESULT IN A ZERO GRADE. Remember, more than 3 words in succession – besides ‘a,’ ‘an,’ or ‘the’ – MUST BE DOCUMENTED. PARAPHRASES MUST ALSO BE DOCUMENTED. IN MY CLASSES, PLAGIARISM IS A VERY SERIOUS OFFENSE.

FAILURE TO MEET THESE DEADLINES WILL RESULT IN A LOSS OF POINTS IN REGARD TO YOUR GRADE. I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE RESEARCH PAPERS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. NO EXCEPTIONS.
