Project #2728 - Articles

Law Event Summary Bonus

Business Law Event Summaries – I want you to be on the lookout for news events related to business law that have occurred within three weeks of submission. They also must be on a topic covered in Business Law II. I will award up to fifteen points on your semester total per summary and you may submit a maximum of two summaries (Possible 30 total bonus points). Submit them just as you have your HW and if you do two, submit both as one document. All summaries must be received by Saturday, March 2nd.

Follow the following organizational structure: 1. Summary 2. Relevance to Business law (How it affects business operations/regulations, why business should pay attention, etc.) – Just because an article references a topic we cover doesn’t make it business law relevant and 3.  Personal reaction/reflection on or to the news. You must adequately cite the source, though no special format is required, so I can see where you got it! Correct spelling, punctuation and writing conventions/skills will be considered in the assignments grade and an assignment of this length should have at most one error.

The following is an example of a summary that would earn the full 15 points:

Spirit Airlines Pilots Strike

Summary

Saturday Morning June 12 pilots of spirit arms walked off their jobs at Spirit Airlines. They did so after trying to reach an agreement in coordination with their contracts after several years of negotiations. Spirit Airlines CEO says  “We are frustrated and disappointed that our pilots have turned down an over 30 percent increase at a cost of over $70 million over five years while disrupting thousands of our customers and jeopardizing the livelihoods of our over 2,000 employees.” Spirit then began to cancel their flights Friday and notified their customers to various travel choices. The strike has been the first U.S. airline operation that runs a normal schedule since the 2005. The pilots are looking for pay on par with Jet Blue, Air Tran, and Southwest.

Relevance

The relevance to business law pertains to strikes, human resources and employment law as a whole. The main issue relating to business law is the implications and options for the Airline Company and pilots. The company can choose to hire temporary replacements otherwise known as scabs. Striking activities are protected under the first amendment rights of the pilots. So, if they choose to picket, they can because they are protected under these rights to freedom of speech. If Spirit chooses to hire replacements that are permanent, they can  as well. They can also keep any temporary people as well. What they cannot do is refuse to fill vacancies. They are then required to rehire the strikers and give them the seniority they had.

Reaction

This seems s to be just another rouse for the airline industry, as the company who wants to reach an agreement may not be able to match the pay without increasing rates possibly. They have talked about carryon luggage being charged a fee for not being a fitting size. This also seems like an improbable situation for the pilots to me due to the fact that Spirit is not as well known nor do they have the resources as Jet Blue or Southwest.
