Project #28056 - Open Genre Research Proposal

Purpose

A prospectus of research forces you to think through your project in its entirety. Your fourth essay will still be at the drafting stages when these proposals are due, so this is a critical time to outline your tentative approach.

Your proposal must have the following categories, in this order:

(Your proposal should have headings, and sectioned according to the below organizational plan. You may choose to use these headings, or it might be better to create more interesting headings.)

Captivating Introduction: A solid paragraph about the importance of the issue and the need for more about it.

Your Engagement- Write at least 250 words of explanation of your interest in this subject, how you are involved or how you would like to be involved.

Argumentative claim: Presented in Toulmin Model.  Use Toulmin theory to construct  a successful argumentative thesis. Try to get it into one sentence. Then, in a couple more sentences, tell me about the warrants and assumptions and qualifications that are within our Toulmin-style statement. This should be a about a solid paragraph when it’s all said and done.

Opposing side: Write a solid paragraph about: what does the “other side” argue? (at least 250 words)

Publication/Genre- Write at least 250 words of explanation detailing where this argument belongs. Who is interested/engaged in this conversation? How do you know? How will your piece fit into your proposed publication? In short, I want to know your chosen genre, as well as your intended publication, as well as an explanation of how your issue/argument will fit into your chosen genre and publication.

Format- Write a 150-200 word description of the sort of format this genre/publication calls for. What are the key features of this genre? How might you tailor your own purpose (your argumentative claim) to meet this publication’s criteria? We’re talking about format here, and visual aids, and all that good stuff. For example, if you are writing a newspaper article, you will be writing for a specific newspaper (they’re all a little different, format-wise), let’s say the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). What are format features of WSJ?  Consider such things as sentence length, paragraph length, columns, headline, tagline, pictures, visual aids, etc.

Audience- Write at least a paragraph synopsis of the Audience Analysis Worksheet, detailing the most significant qualities of the primary audience (age, gender, occupation) of the publication.
