PART II. SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS

Choose 4 out of 10 questions to answer in short answer form. A short answer response means your response does not need to be a formal structured essay answer. However your responses should be much longer than a brief identification and address the question completely. As a general guideline, you should expect to write at least two to three full paragraphs in response to each of the questions asked.

1. World War One

A. Be prepared to explain what factors led to the outbreak and *rapid escalation* of World War One.

B. Be prepared to describe characteristics and consequences of World War One – the fact it was a trench war, an industrial war and a total war.

 

2. Be prepared to explain why 1919 – 1939 was termed an Age of Anxiety by identifying and describing significant causes of that anxiety and instability.

 

3. Be prepared to describe significant changes in economic, social and political conditions imposed by leaders of Stalinist RussiaFascist Italy and Nazi Germany. These descriptions should include the human cost of enforcing these changes.

 

4. World War Two

A. Be prepared to summarize the nature of World War Two (how it was aglobal war, total war and industrial war)�

B. Be prepared to describe costs and consequences of World War Two, in particular for civilians.

 

5. Be prepared to define the term Cold War and explain significant consequences of the Cold War.

 

6. Be prepared to explain IN GENERAL TERMS the political, economic and social problems faced by a new country, particularly a former colony after achieving independence (decolonization).

 

7. Be prepared to identify some critical differences in conditions, needs and agendas of societies in the North as compared to those in the South (i.e. First and Third worlds.) 


PART III. SHORT ESSAY QUESTION

You are expected to provide a specific and thorough explanation in response to this question. Your response should be at least 5 paragraphs (to include an introduction and conclusion paragraph). 

 

 

Be prepared to explain significant factors (social, political and economic) which led to the outbreak of World War Two conflicts in Europe and in Asia. You should discuss at least three distinct points.
