Project #29299 - the issue you will take about it

Historical writing is based on the interpretation of evidence. That is, history is not merely names, dates, and facts, but an argument about the past based on the interpretation of evidence from the past. Historians use newspaper and magazine accounts, letters, diaries, speeches, government documents, photographs, film footage, advertisements, artifacts, and many other sources to reconstruct the past. Historians call sources from the past primary sources, while history textbooks are considered secondary sources.

Select an issue or event from American history since 1900 that interests you. Find at least two primary sources that discuss this event (not sources from Reading the American Past) and write a 4 pages paper analyzing these sources. Pay close attention to the sources, and examine what they can tell us about the past. You should include copies of your sources with your essay; if the sources are lengthy, you can include just the first page.

Here are some questions you may want consider:

What do these sources reveal about the event?

Do they add to or alter what you previously knew about this the event from the

textbook and lectures?

Confirm your understanding of the event? Alter your understanding of it?

Who wrote the source, and for whom? Why?

How does the source reflect the assumptions of its author and its era?

Does it display any particular perspective or bias?
