What to Include in your Analytical Overview of the Movie SKIN:
The word "analytical" here is really all about you using the most pertinent glossary concepts to make sense of what you saw/observed in the movie (and the context/background: the Apartheid timeline handout, that I distributed in class). In your analytical overview, it is IMPERATIVE that you use our standard framework for the class: “Johnson's framework and its 3 key concepts: Social System, Socialization and Paths of Least Resistance (these 3 concepts MUST be part of your 10 glossary concepts). So you would need to name/identify the social system, state how and which individuals made it, how different individuals (those key figures) are participating in it, and how it is shaping them through socialization/enculturation and paths of least resistance. Finally how is the social system at the end of the movie (is it the same as at the beginning when Sandra was a little girl?). Another MUST-USE concept is social construction/social construction of race because this is the overarching theme of the movie, isn't it? How does social construction of race play out in Sandra's life, etc., how does it shape her life, her relationship with her parents and others in South Africa? As you write analytically using those foundational concepts, you will also be using many other glossary terms that "fit the bill"(I won't list those other concepts for you, but I know you have a glossary that I specifically prepared for your use in assignments of this ilk).
