Project #29892 - Literature Research Essay

The Research Essay

Abide by the following instructions:

1.            Select one of the topics below.

2.            Allow adequate time to do the research.

Requirements:

1.            Use a minimum of 3 outside sources; all must be academic databases. Do NOT use commercial search engines (such as Google and Yahoo) or the Internet; your paper will receive a failing grade if you do. Your textbook may be used as a source, but it does not count as one of the 3. More than 3 is better.

2.            You may use works of literature themselves (ie, other novels and short stories), but you still need 3 scholarly sources.  Scholarly sources are commentary and/or analysis ABOUT a work of literature or a literary feature (such as theme or character development).  Do NOT use newspaper articles (unless it's a large, feature story coming out of a journalist's investigation) or one-page articles in popular magazines.

3.            Your essay must be 3-4 pages and adhere to the format below. Your Works Cited page is NOT considered one of the 3-4 pages.

Format:

1.            Use MLA format consistently (Works Cited page, in-text citations, etc).

2.            Double space, use 1" margins, 12 font, etc

3.            It's fine to use one of the many citation machines on the internet.  Some are better than others and all require a careful check by you.  YOU are still the bottom line.  Duke is good:

Respond to one of the following questions:

1. Contextual symbols (which are different from universal symbols) appear frequently in both Trifles and Fences. Explain what contextual symbols are and how they contribute to the literary merit of any work of literature and how specific contextual symbols contribute to Trifles and to Fences.  Read about contextual symbols in your textbook (p. 383, 971 and defined in the glossary).

2. Fences was published in 1983 but addresses issues occurring in the 1950’s. Investigate the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and early 1960’s and explain how the activities, attitudes and social practices of that period are reflected in the play.

3. Desperation is a theme that runs through both of these plays. Minnie surely was desperate; Troy Maxson is probably the most desperate of the characters in Fences. Investigate the psychological state of desperation and explain how both Minnie and Troy manifested this state. Compare the two and comment on the effectiveness of each on their means of coping with their respective desperate situation. You may expand your research to include other literature that uses a desperation as a central feature of the story.

4. Examine the conflict that exists between father and son in both Fences and “Barn Burning.” In each case, explain how the relationship shaped the plot, how it contributed to the theme (or the author’s message) in each and compare the Sarty-Abner-Sarty relationsip with the Troy-Cory relationship. You may expand your research to include other literature that uses a father-son relationship as a central feature of the story.

Scoring Criteria: As indicated in your syllabus, your Research Essay is worth 30 percent of your grade. Approximately one-fourth of those points are for basic requirements and formatting (Did you follow MLA format explicitly (see above), etc), one-fourth of those points are for content development (Did you respond to the prompt (question) explicitly and directly, demonstrate insight and critical thinking, integrate your sources in a meaningful way?), one-fourth is for research (Did you research effectively to find meaningful and credible research?),  and one-fourth is for mechanical proficiency (Is your work free of grammatical errors? Are your sentences constructed well? Are you using the right words to express your thinking?)
